Under Spanish rule travel and residency of Chinese were tightly restricted until late in the 19th century.  Most “Chinese” residents of Iloilo were Chinese men who married local women and became mestizos.   Especially in Iloilo, the Chinoy  mestizos converted to Catholicism, prospered, were considered loyal Spanish subjects and were freed from restrictions involved with being [...]

Alimodian, Iloilo Province

[ 4 Comments ] Posted on 09.22.09 under Alimodian, Iloilo, Heritage

There is so much to like about Alimodian, a small municipality in Iloilo Province. Alimodian is only about twenty-five kilometers from Iloilo City, Alimodian is really a world apart, a pretty quiet town with an almost alpine feel. Alimodian is surrounded by hills and a bit further by mountains. Most everything in Alimodian is well maintained, the streets and plaza free from litter, showing that the residents have pride in their community. Alimodian’s old stone Spanish Church and plaza are the centerpieces. A rare Spanish era stone arched bridge is fighting for survival.

Anini-y, Antique is one of those very special places. It’s remote, a bit hard to get to. It’s a former Spanish colonial outpost with its historic character, integrity and ambiance well preserved. It’s the gateway to beautiful Nogas Island and also hosts Sira-an Hot Springs.

Capiz Shell Windows – Lampirong

Capiz or Lampirong (alternative spelling: Lamperong) Windows. One of the most distinct and beautiful architectural details of old Philippine buildings are the windows made with shell rather than glass.  We’re not sure if this is because glass was not made in the Philippines or it was just too expensive, but whatever the reason, it has [...]

[ No Comments ] Posted on 11.15.08 under Heritage

Catálogo Alfabético de Apellidos of 1849 (Reprinted by the National Archives in Manila in 1973. Publication no. D-3.) During my visit to the majority of the provinces of these islands, I observed that the natives in general lack individual surnames, which distinguished them by families. They arbitrarily adopt the names of saints and this practice has resulted [...]

Downhill on General Luna Street, Iloilo City

[ 1 Comment ] Posted on 09.13.08 under Heritage, Nature, Environment, Perspectives

Generally I try to be pretty positive but I’ve been so sad to see the degradation of one of Iloilo City’s most beautiful streets, Gen. Luna. Gen. Luna Street was all that most Philippine city streets are not. It was a gracious boulevard with a landscaped median with trees separating two lanes in each direction. [...]

Tigbauan Architectural Puzzle

[ 6 Comments ] Posted on 08.30.08 under Heritage, Tigbauan, Iloilo

Tigbauan, Iloilo history, heritage, architecture. Unquestionably there have been many changes to this old Spanish church over the decades and centuries. One major change, the concrete belltowers seem to rest on a massive concrete structure, plastered and finished to mimic stone blocks.  But, if you look closely behind the concrete bell tower supporting structure, one [...]

The Jesuits in Tigbauan, Iloilo

[ 2 Comments ] Posted on 08.22.08 under Heritage, Tigbauan, Iloilo

Tigbauan history and heritage. While the Augustinian order was assigned general responsibility for Panay and Tigbauan in the 16th century, Rodriguez de Figueroa requested Jesuit, not Augustinian missionaries to minister to the residents of his extensive land holdings in Panay.  His holdings were an “encomienda”, a grant from the Spanish crown.  De Figueroa had the [...]
